Ah, a lovely Greek evening. The lights in the harbor. The scent of grilling meat. The choking smoke of a thousand flares.

 Even for a rivalry known as the Derby of the Eternal Enemies, Saturday’s game between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos was unusually contentious. It ended in a 2-1 victory for Olympiakos that all but wrapped up its 38th Greek title. But that wasn’t the half of it.

The game also included an apparent Panathinaikos goal that was disallowed in the 81st minute; a disputed winner in injury time; several stoppages to allow smoke to clear; postgame battles in which fans were accused of kicking and punching the visiting Panathinaikos players; and a locker-room confrontation between several of those players and the Olympiakos club president.
In other words, not your average M.L.S. game.
It’s hard to know whether to admire that kind of passion, or be frightened by it.
