"Purple Haze"

Purple Haze all in my brain
Lately things just don't seem the same
Actin' funny but I don't know why
'Scuse me while I kiss the sky

Purple Haze all around
Don't know if I'm coming up or down
Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me

Help me
Help me
Oh no, oh

[Background voices:]
Hammering talkin' 'bout heart 'n' s-soul
I'm talking about hard stuff
If everybody's still around, fluff and ease, if
So far out my mind
Something's happening, something's happening

Yeah, Purple Haze all in my eyes
Don't know if it's day or night
You've got me blowing, blowing my mind
Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?

Oh help me
Ah yeah, purple haze
Oh, no oh help me
Tell me, baby, tell me
(Purple Haze!)
I can't go on like this
(Purple Haze!)
You're making me blow my mind, mama
(Purple Haze!)
No, no no, it's painful, baby
(Purple Haze!)

Writer(s): Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix said in an interview with the New Musical Express in 1969, "I dream a lot and I put a lot of my dreams down as songs. I wrote one called 'First Around the Corner' and another called 'The Purple Haze', which was all about a dream I had that I was walking under the sea."
The song, according to Jimi Hendrix, partially refers to a science-fiction story "Night of Light" by Philip José Farmer. The "purple haze" term is used there to describe how the sun affects the inhabitants of a planet. Another explanation might be that "purple haze" is LSD, because the Sandoz company sold it in purple capsules.
"I kiss the sky" are commonly misheard as "I kiss this guy". Jimi Hendrix would even pretend to kiss bassist Noel Redding while singing "Purple Haze" live in concerts, e.g. at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.
Purple Haze was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It is considered to be one of the greatest guitar songs, with Rolling Stone ranking it at number two and Q magazine at number one.
