Το BBC Culture κατέληξε, έπειτα από έρευνα και με τη βοήθεια 177 κριτικών κινηματογράφου από όλο τον κόσμο, στις 100 καλύτερες ταινίες του 21ου αιώνα.
Το BBC Culture ζήτησε από 177 κριτικούς κινηματογράφους από όλο τον κόσμο να υποβάλουν τις απαντήσεις τους για 100 ταινίες οι οποίες σύμφωνα με αυτούς είναι οι καλύτερες. Η χρονική περίοδος ήταν περιορισμένη από τον Ιανουάριο του 2000 έως τον Ιούνιο του 2016.
Ο κατάλογος τελικά έχει 102 ταινίες, λόγω της ισοπαλίας μεταξύ Carlos, Requiem και Toni Erdmann. Στον κατάλογο με τις 100 καλύτερες ταινίες είναι αξιοσημείωτο ότι ανάμεσα στις ταινίες δεν υπάρχει το είδος της κωμωδίας και μόνο μία ταινία ανήκει στο είδος των υπερηρώων, («The Dark Knight» του Christopher Nolan»).
