Governments’ stark daily figures on the spread of coronavirus are difficult to compare across countries, and may be significant undercounts. But the data needed to analyse the more reliable and comparable excess mortality metric are only available in a few jurisdictions, leaving these official case and death counts the best available data for much of the world.

  • May 29 2021: Maryland added 517 misclassified deaths to the state total on May 27. These deaths have been distributed over the 12 months to May 26 2021.
  • May 28 2021: Deaths reported by Oklahoma on May 26 included those identified after an audit of reporting systems. These have been distributed over the period May 2020 to May 26 2021.
  • May 26 2021: After processing a backlog of death certificates New Mexico added 113 deaths to the state total on May 24. These have been distributed prior to May 25.
